Huddersfield – Soil Nailing – Meshing
Condor Engineering were tasked with reinforcing an embankment holding up a through road at the back of a housing development in Huddersfield. The road was used by residents of a nearby housing complex and had moderate traffic going across it thus requiring strengthening to ensure safety for the new gardens being overlooked by the road.
Condor produced a geotechnical design of an array of anchor positions to ensure the wall was sufficiently reinforced. The space available was restricted therefore the Husqvarna was deemed to be the most suitable plant for the works. The soil nails were installed using grout flush as the site was still in an early phase so the spillage of grout on the surrounding area was not deemed to be of critical importance.
The Husqvarna was put in front of the first anchor position and drilling commenced, once the soil nail had reached the desired depth and grout could be seen egressing from the hole the installation was complete. This process continued until all soil nails had been installed and grouted.
The mesh used is a rigid steel matrix which was overlapped to form a solid single lattice type structure over the installed nails. A layer of vis queen was placed under the mesh, this was to stop any loose material from the embankment escaping. The mesh was affixed to the wall via plates and nuts over the anchors.
