The History of Condor Projects

Condor Projects Limited (Condor) was incorporated in December 1999 and is now one of the larger and more specialist contractors working in the field of ground stabilisation. Condor was formed from a previous business, Precision Drilling Ltd, having been sold since its inception in 1986 by Martyn Wiseman.

During this period, Martyn Wiseman assisted Farrans in Belfast on the controlled bursting of rock on a sensitive hospital project. However, after trading successfully as a Diamond Drilling and Controlled Demolition Company, a deliberate change of emphasis over time led to Condor evolving in its current form.

Presently, Condor undertakes projects in niche areas, predominantly soil nailing for ground stabilisation (including Rock Anchoring), Specialist reservoir repair work for the Utilities industry, Bridge Repairs through anchoring and Pile cutting. For further detail please see the website

In terms of carrying out projects of scale, some recent examples are listed below for your information.

Work undertaken for Network Rail (Main contractor: Morgan Sindall in 2013/14) provides a good example. Soil Nailing and rock Anchoring taking place at Kemble Station with Ground Anchors being installed at nearby Moor Farm at the same time. The value of the contract was £1.2m. The work varied in terms of installation methods with use of a 30 tonne long reach machine, 20T Excavators, Husqvarna remote controlled drilling rig and Hand installation by rope access. Photographs of this project are attached to provide illustration of Condor’s wide variety of expertise, equipment and capabilities.

Another prestigious contract was completed in 2014 for Canal & River Trust (formerly British Waterways) for Keir Group totalling £750,000, was the emergency works to Llanfoist Canal, South Wales. This was a reactive project following an embankment slip below the canal, with the possibility of the complete loss of the canal network. Condor were called in at short notice to provide the expertise to provide value engineering, using the unique range of equipment and skills. The final result received high praise from both Central and Local Government. No other company in the UK had the equipment, knowledge or skill set to complete this project within the time scale required.

Finally, another Network Rail Project at Farnworth, Bolton was carried out in various stages during 2015 and early 2016 for Buckingham Group with a value of circa £500,000. Again this involved a variety of options and types of anchoring deployed to service the client’s requirements. Condor was specifically requested to undertake the works, based on previous good experience, depth of knowledge and bespoke range of specialist drilling equipment. The multiple faceted operations required working in limited room, tight timescales and extremely poor ground conditions. ‘Condor’s performance was second to none, not only coming in on budget but ahead of schedule on a number of sections. It was nothing more than we expected, which is why we chose them to lead this critical part of the works’ Matthew Murr, Senior Project Manager, Buckingham Group.
